Willy Evernham Wins Inaugural Legends Dirt Modified Championship
October 5, 2011 - The Legends Dirt Modified championship was settled this past weekend at East Lincoln Speedway, and when the dust settled, it was Willy Evernham taking home the title. The inaugural Legends Dirt Modifieds season consisted of ten points races at East Lincoln Speedway in Stanley, North Carolina, and Evernham was a force all season long.
Willy Evernham, the nephew of former NASCAR Sprint Cup Series owner Ray Evernham has plenty of racing experience, but until this year had not won a championship. Over the course of the season he won five of the 10 races, and proved to be a threat each week to fellow competitors which included multi-champion driver Tommy Corellis and Dirt Track Racing School instructor Mark Lowrey.
This past Saturday was the series’ points championship event, with two features in one day to make up for previous races being postponed due to inclement weather. Evernham showed his determination and fought his way to win both heat and feature races, which lead to taking the championship lead over by eight points at the conclusion of the day’s events. This was his first championship after competing in several types of racing classes in previous years, including Bandoleros, SpeedSTRs, Dirt Crate Late Models and Asphalt Late Models.
Evernham at the beginning of the season set two goals; to have fun, and to help give back to the community. He decided early on he wanted to get involved with the charity Autism Speaks, as Autism spectrum disorders are close to his heart. He vowed to help the charity as much as he could, and his car sports both Autism Awareness and Autism Speaks logos. Autism Speaks has a charity walk around Charlotte Motor Speedway called “Walk Now for Autism Speaks” which is this Saturday, October 8th. “I want to do as much as I can to help this cause, and this walk seemed like a good way to get involved” said Evernham.
Finishing second in the points was veteran racer Tommy Corellis, who had two wins on the season. Mark Lowrey finished third, Evan York finished fourth and Johnny Love took home the fifth place points position.
Although the 2011 Legends Dirt Modified championship is in the books, the series is planning a special non-points event at Dixie Speedway in Woodstock, Georgia later this month. More information about this upcoming event will be announced soon at LegendsModified.com .
